    Deaths by Cause:
    Data for years 1951-1978 are from Vital Statistics Japan published by the Statistics and Information Department, Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Health and Welfare. Both the detailed lists and the abbreviated lists (B-list) were used.
     
    Data for years 1979-90 were provided by Shigesato Takahashi at the Institute for Population Problems, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan. They were in an electronic format and were supplemented by the detailed lists in the Vital Statistics Japan. All data from Vital Statistics Japan were entered manually.
