Detailed Data
Death counts are from the National Center for Health Statistics. Census counts
(referring to April 1) are from the Bureau of the Census. We used quarterly intercensal
and monthly post-censal Census Bureau estimates and NCHS deaths to compute January 1
population estimates, exposure estimates, death rates, and life tables. We have made no
adjustments to the raw data. Age misstatement at older ages is a well-known problem in
population statistics for the U.S. These inaccuracies have the effect of biasing death
rates downward. In general, therefore, life tables computed by the Social Security
Administration and the decennial life tables presented above should be considered more
reliable than the tables in this section, because the former sets include adjustments to
account for these inaccuracies. We include estimates for blacks, whites, and all races
only, because estimation problems associated with smaller racial groups would make
comparable estimates especially unreliable.
